OnePlus’s latest smartphone, OnePlus 5, has received universal acclaim because of its features and camera quality. After OnePlus 3T, the brand has launched this incredible device. OnePlus 5 comes with dual rear camera, 8GB RAM, 64GB internal memory, Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, and Gorilla Glass 5 screen protection. Though, some experts don’t consider it as a value for money product but when you compare this device with other renowned brands then you will realize that this device deserves a thumbs up. It is a very user-friendly smartphone and you can customize it as per your needs. One thing that I liked about this device is that it does not have hidden features, like you find in other devices. Everything is available at your finger tips. Though you hardly need anyone’s help to understand your device, however, I’ve come up with this post to help you know your device better than before. In this post, I’ll show you 30+ OnePlus 5/3T tips and tricks.
OnePlus 5 dual rear camera lets you capture more focused pictures of the subject by blurring the background. You can check Instagram hastag #shotononeplus to find out how powerful and efficient camera OnePlus 5 has. Its design is not that much attractive and somewhat similar to OnePlus 3T, however, it fits into the hands perfectly. Let’s come to the point, scroll down to read 30+ OnePlus 5/3T tips and tricks.
Note: OnePlus 3T may not contain some of the features listed below.
30+ OnePlus 5 Tips and Tricks –
1. Move cursor by sliding fingers on the space bar –
Do you know you can move your OnePlus 5 cursor by sliding your fingers onto the space bar? If not then just slide across space bar to move the cursor. Usually, it’s very difficult to bring text cursor to a desired position but in OnePlus 5 you can do so by sliding your fingers on the space bar.
If Cursor Control option is disabled on your device then simply open your smartphone’s keypad > tap on Google icon > settings > glide typing > turn ‘ON’ gesture cursor control.
2. Change Pulse Notification Color –
You can customize LED color to easily recognize pulse notification signal. You can set different colors for different things for example you can set green color for battery full, red for low battery, and blue or other for charging. Furthermore, you can select or deselect apps for pulse notifications. To do so, head to settings > display > LED notifications > select preferred colors.
3. Pocket Mode –
Pocket mode is a beneficial option to prevent pocket-dialing, phone accidentally dials a number while in the pocket. OnePlus 5 comes with pocket mode to prevent pocket-dialing. I’ve been facing pocket-dial problem on my Samsung J7 Prime and now I’ve added a passcode to it. If something like that (pocket-dialing) happening with you and you own OnePlus 5 then now you don’t need to worry. Just enable pocket mode on your device to get rid of pocket-dial problem.
To enable pocket mode, go to settings > advanced > turn ON pocket mode.
4. Turn Your OnePlus 5 Into an E-reader –
I love this OnePlus 5 feature! OnePlus 5 reading mode feature lets you read documents and the like things without harming your eyes. Mobile’s harmful blue light and other radiations harm your eyes so badly. OnePlus 5’s reading mode lets your convert your device into an e-reader – your mobile becomes like a Kindle (almost), and this way you can read your important documents without putting your eyes into danger.
After turning ON this feature, your OnePlus 5 will adjust its light according to ambient light conditions.
To enable reading mode, head to settings > display > turn ON reading mode.
You can also select apps to enable and disable reading mode automatically whenever you open or close the selected apps. To turn ON automatic reading mode for selected apps, simply tap on ‘+‘ next to “add apps for reading mode” and select the apps.
5. Turn ON Gaming DND Mode –
OnePlus 5 gaming do not disturb mode lets you play games without any interruption. You can block unwanted notifications to play your favorite mobile games without any interruption. Only important notifications like calls and alarms, work in gaming do not disturb mode. If you like to play games on your device then you should use this OnePlus 5 feature to enhance your mobile-gaming experience. Gaming DND Mode also allows you to lock hard navigation buttons so you can get best possible experience. To activate gaming mode on your device go to settings > advanced > gaming do not disturb > turn ON preferred options > tap on add apps and select games for gaming mode.
6. Take Longer Screenshot –
Your OnePlus 5 allows you to save longer screenshots larger than its screen size. By using this feature, you can save webpages as screenshots for offline reading or you can capture interesting screenshots to share with friends. To take longer screenshots, just press power key + low volume key or use three finger gesture (as usual you do to take screenshot) and then tap on the rectangular box option. Upon tapping on the option, your phone will start taking screenshot of the entire page. Just tap anywhere on the screen to stop it.
7. Enable Three-Finger Screenshot –
Three-finger screenshot feature allows you to take quick screenshots by swiping on the screen with three fingers. Often some users face difficulty to take screenshot with hard keys like power key, home key, or volume rocker keys, for such people it’s a very beneficial feature. To enable three-finger screenshot on your OnePlus 5 or OnePlus 3T, head to settings > gestures > turn ON three-finger screenshot.
8. Use Gestures –
Like OnePlus 3T, OnePlus 5 also supports gestures. You get more gesture options than OnePlus 3T along with customization option for instance with letter ‘O’ you can launch your camera app but if you want to assign letter ‘O’ to some other app than you can do so in your OnePlus 5 but not in OnePlus 3T.
Similarly, you have some more letters to assign your apps. Just customize your phone’s gesture control section to quickly launch your favorite apps.
To customize gesture section of your phone, open settings > gestures > assign apps to the letters. (See screenshot in tip 7)
When your device’s screen is off, you can draw two parallel lines with your two fingers to launch or stop your music app. In the same way, use angel brackets ‘<‘ and ‘>‘ for previous or next track.
Furthermore, double tap on the screen to wake it up.
To use above gestures, make sure to turn them ON.
9. Lock Apps –
You can protect your apps with password without using any third party app. We protect our social media apps, banking apps, and digital wallet apps with password. For that purpose, we use third party apps but if you own OnePlus 5 or OnePlus 3T then you don’t need any third party app because your device comes with an inbuilt feature that lets you lock your mobile applications.
To lock your apps, go to settings > security and fingerprint > app locker > select apps to lock.
10. Secure Your Important Files –
If you’re using your OnePlus smartphone for business purpose then you might have saved some important documents into your phone. Are your documents safe in your phone? If you’re concerned about it then let me tell you that your device offers you an encrypted space where you can save your important documents. In your phone’s file manager section, you can find Secure Box folder. You can move your important documents to secure box. To do so, just long tap on a file and then tap on Set as secure. Now your file will be moved to secure box and no third party app can access your protected file.
To access your secure box files, head to file manager and open secure box.

Some users like on screen navigation buttons. OnePlus has taken them into account. Those who want on-screen navigation buttons can enable them by going to settings > buttons > turn ON On-screen navigation bar.
In another scenario, OnePlus back and recent apps buttons are on left and right side respectively which is confusing for some users. So again OnePlus has taken them into account too and for them it has added swap recent and back buttons option. To swap the order of the buttons, head to settings > buttons > turn ON swap buttons order.
14. Long Press Actions, Double Tap Actions and Split Screen –
Long press actions allow you to launch apps or features by pressing buttons (Home/Recent/Back) for long time say 3-5 seconds or by tapping and holding on the screen. You can customize this section by going to settings > buttons > select long press action for all buttons.
OnePlus 5 split screen mode lets you use two apps at the same time on your mobile screen. To split your device screen, press and hold Home screen button.
Note: Some apps do not support split screen. By default, Home key is assigned for split screen, however, you can change it by heading to settings > buttons.
15. Easter Egg –
Try this, just for fun! Open your phone’s calculator app and type ‘1+=‘ and see what happens. You will be able to see OnePlus tagline ‘Never Settle.’
16. Make Pattern Invisible –
It’s not good to show password unlock pattern on your device screen because someone can easily know what is the password/unlock pattern of your smartphone. In other scenario, if you’re using any malicious app onto your phone then that app might steal your personal information by recording your activities. Therefore, for security purpose you should make password and pattern invisible on your OnePlus smartphone. To hide password and pattern, open settings menu > security and fingerprint > tap on the gear icon front of the screen lock > turn ON show password or pattern.
17. Add More Than One Fingerprint –
Probably you’re already aware that you can add more than one fingerprint to your phone. However, if you’re not aware then for your kind information, you can add more than one fingerprint to your phone for example you can add your other family members’ fingerprints to your phone so they can unlock your device without you. To upload more fingerprints to your phone head to settings > security and fingerprint > tap on ‘+’ icon next to add fingerprint.
18. Add Lock Screen Message –
Your OnePlus 5 or OnePlus 3T allows you to add a message on your lock screen. I’m using this feature to get my phone back; if it gets lost. I have added a message on my home screen, “please call to ***M.No.**** if you’ve found.” This way there are some probabilities that someone would call me to return my phone. You can also use this feature to add your favorite tag line.
To use this OnePlus 5 feature, go to settings > security and fingerprint > tap on the gear icon front of the screen lock > add your lock screen message.

OnePlus had added so many good features to its latest smartphones, OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 3T, for example it has added shelf to get quick access to your favorite or most used apps. Another appreciable work that OnePlus has done is that you can bring notification panel by swiping down anywhere on the mobile screen; which is very helpful for many users whose hands are not large enough. Another similar feature is that you can bring your app menu up by sliding your finger upwards on anywhere on the screen. Simply swipe –
- to the right to get shelf menu.
- upward to get app menu
- downward to get notification; further downward swipe will open the quick menu buttons.

To use this OnePlus 5 feature go to settings > security & fingerprint > quick pay > turn ON screen off quick pay.
26. Control Recent Apps –
This feature is available in all OnePlus smartphones that lets you manage your recent apps behavior. By going to settings > advanced > recent app management, you can manage your recent apps behavior for example you will get two options “Normal Clear” and “Deep Clear”. Normal clear simply removes the cache of the apps and Deep clear stops the background activities of the apps.
27. Alert Slider –
Few smartphones come with alert slider switch, that lets you switch between three profiles; slient, do not disturb, and ring. Another handy thing you’ve got with your OnePlus 5 smartphone. You can quickly put your phone on different modes with alert slider physical switch. You can customize your alert slider switch. To do so, open settings > tap on alert slider under customization > customize three options as per you need. You will see multiple options to choose from and under ring you can only enable or disable vibration. If you don’t know how to use alert slider then let me tell you that if you put alert slider –
- at top position then this will put your OnePlus smartphone into silent mode.
- at middle then this will enable do not disturb mode; in which you will get important notifications only like calls and alarms.
- at bottom position then it will activate ring mode.
28. Adjust Font Size –
Reading tiny fonts can cause serious vision problems. Therefore, you’d adjust your font size to make reading easier and to reduce eyestrain.
